The Nightbirds have been writing and performing their own brand of music together since 2001. Their self-titled 2006 release includes songs ranging from the folk-rock ballad “Only Roses” to the jagged pop of “Tragedy.”
The Nightbirds have played clubs, galleries, and performance spaces around Philadelphia, where their original tunes and innovative covers of songs by artists such as Richard Thompson, Cowboy Junkies, and Over the Rhine have won listeners over. The band is characterized by its high level of musicianship, arresting vocals, tight rhythms, and inventive songwriting. Vocalist Janet Benton has been compared to singers as diverse as Patsy Cline, Sandy Denny, and Grace Slick, while bassist and songwriter Andrew Nelson pens and sings tunes reminiscent of XTC and early Elvis Costello. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Troiani, in addition to his searing lead guitar, fills out the band’s sound with accordion, mandolin, and lap steel guitar.
